It’s time to start quilting!
If you’d like to incorporate a quilt block or pieced design into your bag, now’s the time to make it. There are so many options to explore—try a free quilt block pattern, or pull a favourite block from a quilt pattern you already have. This is a great opportunity to get creative and make your bag uniquely yours.
If you’re looking to save a bit of time, pre-quilted fabric is always an option. Some fabrics are available already quilted, or you could have a panel quilted by a longarmer.
For those quilting their own panel, you’ll start by making your quilt sandwich. Layer your lining, batting or foam, and exterior fabric. To keep everything in place, baste the layers together using pins or a spray adhesive like 505. I tend to reach for spray—it’s quick and holds everything really well.
Once your panel is basted, you can choose your quilting design. This could be free motion, straight lines, or something more decorative—whatever suits your style. For this project, I went with a diagonal grid using straight line quilting. If you’re doing something similar, a walking foot can make a big difference in preventing shifting and puckering.
