Learning to sew clothing comes with unique challenges. From tracing a pattern to sewing a neat hem, a few essential supplies will help a beginner enjoy the learning process!
One of the most basic items every sewist needs are a set of straight pins. There are a variety of options depending on the type of fabric you’re sewing with, but you can sew most projects with a universal pin. Glass head pins (like these ones from Sohmo) are great for beginners, as they won’t melt under an iron, or flat-head pins that will lay flat while you sew, such as these Clover pins.
Measuring yourself is one of the first steps in sewing a garment. A tape measure is essential to picking your size and helping you make changes to your pattern. There are many options to choose from, including a self-measuring option for that helps you with those hard to reach spots!
If you have ever tried to cut fabric with household scissors, you will know the struggle! A good-quality pair of fabric shears will make your sewing experience much more enjoyable. LDH Scissors are one of our favourite company, and they make shears in different sizes.
A tailor’s chalk is very helpful in a sewing kit, whether you are tracing a pattern or marking notches on where to sew your fabric. These marking tools typically disappear with water or heat, and they come in ink or chalk versions.
Tracing paper is one of our most recommended products for sewists of every skill level. Instead of cutting into your pattern, it can be traced onto this durable paper. Sewists love it because they can make adjustments to the fit and trace different sizes from the original pattern tissue.
A ruler is very useful for making straight lines, but did you know you can also perfect curves with a specialty ruler? Garments often have gentle curves around armholes and hips that can be traced with a curved ruler.
Labels are a lovely touch to show pride in your sewing (and remind you which side is the back)! Our labels are so cute, you’ll want to sew them on the outside of your clothes!
