Learn to Sew a Quilted Jacket (Intermediate Class)
Have you been swooning over all the quilted jackets that sewists have been posting to their social media? They’re stylish, timeless, and a practical layering piece for those cooler days ahead. If you’ve ever wanted to make your own but weren’t sure where to start, maybe feeling like it’s an overwhelming project, then this is the class for you!! In this choose-your-own-adventure intermediate sewing class, you will learn how to make a quilted jacket pattern of your choice.
This class is perfect for garment sewists who want to get into quilting or quilters who want to learn to sew garments!
This is a five-session class. Please ensure you can attend all five sessions, and have access to a sewing machine for homework. There will be homework between classes.
As a prerequisites to take this class, you should know how to operate a sewing machine and basic sewing techniques, including:
- how to wind a bobbin
- how to thread a sewing machine
- how to backstitch
- how to cut fabric on the grain
- how to find and use right and wrong sides of fabric
- concepts of basic garment construction (ex. notches, finishing raw seams, pressing seams, making/using bias tape) OR quilt construction (basting using your preferred method, making quilt sandwich, quilting, bias binding techniques)
You will learn how to:
- plan a garment sewing project, take your measurements, and choose pattern size
- read and follow a sewing pattern
- quilt in a straight line
- bias bind seams/edges
- sew buttonholes/ties/snaps (depending on what your pattern calls for)
You will need:
- a reliable sewing machine at home to complete any homework for this class
- a quilted jacket pattern of your choosing, such as:

- a completed quilt top if you plan to make a patchwork jacket, OR outer fabric if you plan to make a wholecloth quilted jacket
- fabric for jacket lining
- batting
- bias binding or fabric to make bias binding
- thread for seams and for quilting
- tracing paper
We will provide:
- a sewing machine for in-class use
- all the necessary tools for a successful project
