Dresden Plate Quilt Applique Class (Advanced Beginner - Sewing)
Ever wanted to make a Dresden plate or maybe a Grandmother’s fan and just felt overwhelmed with where to start? In this class we will use the Dresden plate ruler, learn how to make the wedges, piece them together and hand appliqué them to a background. Then, if you will learn how to make a perfect circle to appliqué on the plate. This first class starts as a cutting and machine piecing class with homework, you’ll learn how to create a template out of cardstock and how to get the perfect circle. We will discuss fabrics and thread colours and homework. The second class requires a finished pieced plate, background fabric and your hand stitching kit for some slo stitching. We will learn about placing your feature piece onto background and doing hand appliqué to secure it together. And bring all your questions about appliqué.

Fabric
- Fabric requirements: If you are using only one fabric for wedges, you will need a half yard (you will have left over fabric) and then a 5x5 piece for the centre circle. Try to have high contrast. For scrappy, between 20-30 pieces of fabrics at least 7x3 inches. Note: while you will only use 20 wedges on your plate, I want to be sure you have some extra in case you want to swap some of your fabrics in and out of the plate. And then for the centre circle-one 5x5 square. I recommend a solid or something that differentiates from the scrappy wedges. You will also need a piece of fabric to applique the dresden plate to - a FQ would be perfect.
- Thimble (bring any and all of your thimbles)
- Thread - we provide white and black 100% polyester 50wt thread. If you would like to use something different, please provide your own. The instructor suggests a cotton, polyester or silk thread in a 50-80wt in a colour that is similar to your fabrics. If you are using many colours in your dresden plate, consider using a light gray thread.
- Glue stick (completely optional)
- Thread conditioner (if you would like to use it)
- Sharp pins (appliqué if you have them)
