Sew an On Deck Popover OR the Landgate Jacket Class (Advanced Beginner)

Our first SEW THIS OR THAT CLASS!! Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in sewing feminine presenting clothes, however we know that men love to sew as well!! Therefore, we are going to try a few of these classes, choosing similar patterns with completely different feels to give you, our customers, more choices.
It seems like the summer heat has finally rolled in and I'm already thinking about the cool nights that will be here in just a few months. Either of these jackets would make a great choice to keep the cool nights at bay, keep the mosquitoes off and will easily take you into fall.
This class is beginner friendly, if you can thread a machine and sew a straightish line then come join us and have some fun. First up is the Popover, you'll find the Landgate info below.
The On Deck Popover by Matchy Matchy is a playful take on a vintage seaworthy jacket with it's fun collar detail and oversized style. It can also be made with a cozy hood. With all Matchy Matchy sewing patterns, we’ve designed the On Deck Popover to have simple shapes and easy construction to take the overwhelm out of sewing and to help you find the joy of discovery.
You will learn;
- about hoods and collars
- facing with buttons
- cuffs and side slits
- measuring and choosing the right size
- tracing and cutting your pattern.
You will need;
- 6 -22mm buttons
- fabric recommended for this garment is a mid to heavy weight woven like twill or demin, a light corduroy, even a mid weight cotton jacquard.
- tracing paper
- matching thread
We will provide;
- a printed copy of your chosen pattern
- a sewing machine for in class use
- all the necessary tools for a successful project
The Landgate Jacket by Merchant and Mills give us a classic pull over anorak feel. It's chic and understated but can also be a great workhorse of a jacket. It's Merchant and Mills first pattern designed for both men and woman. You can add some decorative top stitching to accentuate the jackets simple form or leave it plain and simple.
You will learn;
- how to create a channel for the waist drawstring
- setting a zipper
- sewing a zipper guard
- measuring and choosing the right size
- tracing and cutting your pattern
- sewing with a heavy fabric
- making button holes
You will need;
- tracing paper
- a 7" metal zipper or at least 8" of Zipper tape and a pull
- 2 - 1/2" to 3/4" buttons for the pockets
- lining fabric for the side pockets (light fabric like quilting cotton)
- 0.5m of light woven interfacing
- 2-3m of drawstring cord
- fabric recommended for this jacket is cotton canvas, drill, denim, oilskin, mid to heavy linen and even soft wool.
You will need between 2.5m and 4m depending on size, please consult the pattern HERE for exact measurements.

- a printed copy of your chosen patternd
- a sewing machine for in class use
- all the necessary tools for a successful project
- 2 metal eyelets and the use of our Vario Press
