Introduction to Bag Making: Compass Bag Class (Advanced Beginner - Sewing)

Have you wanted to try bag making but don't know where to start? This class is for you! You will learn the basics of bag making while making the Compass Bag by Noodlehead Patterns. The Compass Bag is a cross body style that you can make in two sizes and we will be making the version with slip style exterior pockets (no flaps).
This is a three session class. Please make sure you can attend all sessions.

Prerequisites:
- How to use a sewing machine: this class will not cover basic sewing machine operation such as threading a needle, switching needles, how to adjust stitch length, locking stitches, reverse stitching, pivoting corners, winding bobbins etc.
- How to sew seams with a seam allowance
- How to cut out pattern pieces
You will learn:
- about materials (exterior fabrics, lining and interfacing) commonly used in bag making
- how to work with thicker fabrics
- about tools needed for bag making
- how to sew patch pockets
- how to sew an inset zipper pocket
- how to make a strap with hardware
- how to top stitch
We will provide:
- A copy of the Compass Bag pattern
- A copy of the book Making Bags: A Field Guide (An excellent resource for all things bag making and also includes patterns.)
You will need:
- For large size - with adjustable crossbody strap
- 0.7m 44" wide canvas or waxed canvas for exterior
- 1.15m quilting cotton for lining
- 2.3m SF101 woven fusible interfacing for lining
- matching polyester thread
- 18mm magnetic snap
- 2 x 1" d rings
- 2 x 1" swivel hooks
- 1 x 1" slider
- 8" zipper for inside pocket
- 1.25m 1" webbing
- For small size - with fixed length strap
- 0.5m 44" wide canvas or waxed canvas for exterior
- 1m quilting cotton for lining
- 1.9m SF101 woven fusible interfacing for lining
- matching polyester thread
- 18mm magnetic snap
- 2 x 1" d rings
- 2 x 1" swivel hooks
- 6" zipper for inside pocket
- 0.75m 1" webbing
- You may need additional interfacing for the exterior fabric depending on which fabric is used but we will discuss that in class.
