Sewing Beginner Classes

Here you will find a list and description of all of our current Beginner classes.   Scroll down to see all the options and when you see the one you want to take follow the Book Now link to be taken to our Booking site to reserve your spot.

The following prerequisites and Class policies apply to all Beginner Classes.  Please familiarise yourself with them.  Please refer to each class below for a list of required supplies.

Prerequisites:

  • none - no sewing experience necessary (or have not sewn for a long time - several years) and/or have never used a sewing machine before.
  • All fabric and supplies can be purchased in store or provided by yourself.
  • Minimum registration for this class is 3 students. Maximum is 5.
  • These classes are for those ages 16 and up.

Space in our classes is limited, therefore in order to reserve your seat, a 100% non-refundable deposit is required. You may register for a class in person, online, or over the phone (613-854-9091) with a credit card.

There are no refunds for classes. Please note that we reserve the right to postpone and reschedule a class because of unforeseen circumstances. ​We will make every effort to contact our students to inform them that a class has been cancelled and arrange makeup classes.​

Beginner Classes 


 Infinity Scarf

Learn to follow a simple tutorial to create your own infinity scarf! It's the perfect item to finish off an outfit or keep you warm when it's chilly outside. You can make scarves to match any outfit, and think of the gift giving possibilities!

You will learn:

  • Sewing machine basics such as winding a bobbin and threading the machine
  • How to follow simple instructions on construction
  • How to sew with a seam allowance and pivoting corners
  • How to cut with a rotary cutter and ruler

You will need:

  • 2m of medium-weight fabric such as quilting cotton, flannel, double gauze or lawn
  • matching thread

Prerequisites:

  • None! No sewing experience necessary (or have not sewn for a long time - several years) and/or have never used a sewing machine before.

Furoshiki Bag

Do you want to learn basic sewing skills and be able to make as many bags as you want? The Miyako bag handle is a unique model and inspired by Japanese bags. It allows you to make a bag from a 90-100cm square of fabric (furoshiki) in just a few seconds. This removable handle will allow you to make as many bags as you want by simply changing fabric or sewn shapes.

You will learn:

  • Sewing machine basics such as winding a bobbin and threading the machine
  • How to follow simple instructions on construction
  • How to hem
  • How to mitre corners
  • How to cut with a rotary cutter and ruler

You will need:

  • 1m of quilting cotton
  • matching thread

You will get:

  • 1 x Leather Furoshiki Bag Handle

  • None! No sewing experience necessary (or have not sewn for a long time - several years) and/or have never used a sewing machine before.

Drawstring Bag

Learn to follow a simple tutorial to create our own little drawstring bag. These bags are great little versatile bags to sort little toys, organize things for travel, stash your gym clothes, use as gift bags, the possibilities are endless!

You will learn:

  • Sewing machine basics such as winding a bobbin and threading the machine
  • How to follow simple instructions on construction
  • How to sew with a seam allowance and pivoting corners
  • How to cut with a rotary cutter and ruler

You will need:

  • 0.5m of quilting cotton or 2 Fat Quarters
  • 2m of cotton twill tape
  • matching thread

Prerequisites:

  • None! No sewing experience necessary (or have not sewn for a long time - several years) and/or have never used a sewing machine before.

 Learn to Sew with Knits and Wovens

Want to learn how to sew, but not sure where to start? This is a great class for you! In this class you will learn to how to use a sewing machine and sew both woven and knit fabrics. You will then use your new skills to make a 'Rosie the Riveter' style woven headband & twist knit headband!

Prerequisites:

  • none - no sewing experience necessary (or have not sewn for a long time - several years) and/or have never used a sewing machine before.

You will learn:

  • Sewing machine basics
  • How to sew a simple seam with both knit and woven fabrics
  • How to cut with a rotary cutter and ruler

You will need:

  • 0.25m jersey knit fabric like cotton jersey, french terry or performance wear fabrics (non-directional). A knit with good recovery is key! Look for lycra/spandex content. * Please choose a non-slippery knit fabric.
  • 0.25m woven fabric like quilting cotton or linen (non-directional) * Please choose a woven fabric without a lot of drape.

 Cozy Cowl

Learn to follow a simple tutorial to create your own extra large cozy cowl scarf! It's the perfect item to keep you warm when it's chilly outside.

Prerequisites:

  • none

You will learn:

  • Sewing machine basics such as winding a bobbin and threading the machine
  • How to follow simple instructions on construction
  • How to sew with a seam allowance
  • How to cut with a rotary cutter and ruler

We will provide:

  • any sewing tools needed during the class

You will need:

  • 0.5m jersey knit fabric
  • 0.5m thicker knit fabric such as French Terry, sweatshirt fleece, soft sweat
  • matching thread

French Seamed Pillow Case

Have you wanted to learn how to sew but need some help? Would you like to make a custom pillow case? Learn to sew by making a french-seamed pillow case for a standard size bed pillow! You will learn how to use a sewing machine, how to cut fabrics and how to sew a simple project. End result is a cute pillowcase for your pillow.

Prerequisites:

  • none!

You will learn:

  • How to wind a bobbin and thread a sewing machine
  • How to follow simple instructions on construction
  • How to sew with seam allowance and pivoting corners
  • Grading seams
  • Use burrito method
  • How to cut with a rotary cutter and ruler

What is provided:

  • any tools needed during class
  • sewing machine to use during class

You will need to bring:

  • 0.75m - 1.25 m quilting cotton (depending on directional or non-directional fabric)
  • 0.25 m each of two coordinating quilting cottons
  • Matching thread if desired (we provide white and black thread)
